Yoga and tinnitus

Yoga and tinnitus

I absolutely LOVE when I get questions that challenge me to dig deeper into new areas of what Yoga can help with. The other day I received a question if Yoga can help with tinnitus and I went on a journey to figure out what Yoga poses would be best to reduce tinnitus. Note that this isn’t a treatment nor a cure, it is suggestions you can try and see of they work for you or not.

First what is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a ringing sound in your ears, this is normally a sound that isn’t coursed by outside sounds and other people are not able to hear the tone. It is often described as a ringing, buzzing, humming or clicking sound. Tinnitus can be coursed by several conditions, it can be due to age hearing loss, a damage to hearing, or it can have something to do with circulation. It is said to be effecting 15 % of adults.

Other reasons for tinnitus might be:

1. Stress
2. A stiff neck or stiff jaws
3. Joint disorders in the jaws
4. Low blood circulation in the brain
5. Accumulation of earwax
6. High levels of cholesterol in the blood
7. Cardiac ailments
8. Infection in the ear, nose or throat
9. Stiffening of the middle bone in the ear
10. Allergies

I found a very interesting study and it is listed below, showing that Yoga may have a role in reducing tinnitus. You can follow the link and see the whole rutine. The interesting thing is, that meditation and pranayama is also included as a part of the Yoga practice. I often think, that people forget about this part of the Yoga practice, they practice the asana (poses) as a workout and forget the mindfulness part of that Yoga truly is. In the past, the first practice was actually mediation, because the people didn’t need the more physical practice, due to the level of being active in their every day lives. Now, we don’t move much, so it makes sense that people lean towards the physical practice… I do think, it is really important to combine the practice of all.

Stress reduction… Tinnitus can be related to stress as it says in the article and Yoga, mediation and pranayama has been studied over the years, showing to reduce stress in the body. From studying hormonal therapy for over 2 years, reducing stress can have a positive effect on the mind, body and spirit, and reducing different physical symptoms. Stepping onto the Yoga mat, is much more then just asana and exercise, it is a practice that can help you overcome and deal with not only stress, anxiety, also problems sleeping, being depressed and probably many more things that isn’t studied yet.

The asana in the photo is Trikonasana, this asana has a lot of good benefits that can help with stress reduction and that may lead to help with tinnitus.

  • Trikonasana, increases stability, activities the core muscles

  • Helps balance and stability in the body

  • Open the hips and shoulders

  • Stretches and lengthens the spine. If you have stiffness in the back and spine, it can help with increasing flexibility

  • Is good to develop strength in shoulders and arms

  • Stimulates the inner organs

Trikonasana (triangle pose): This pose helps circulate “fresh” blood into your head and neck and you may even begin to feel your ears “pop open” as a result.
